The Strawberry Rescue

IMG_4686As an apartment bound farmer, I take every opportunity I can to get my hands dirty. So when one of my good friends and fellow grower wanted some help building some strawberry beds at his parents house, I jumped at the opportunity.

They had already torn up the the old strawberry patch that was about 12×12 ft. It would produce some strawberries, but was so big it was hard to to manage the weeds. It was also hard to harvest any berries in the middle. That afternoon we built 4  5×5 boxes so there would be a 2 ft path way.

While we setting up the new beds i saw the distinctive strawberry leaves, I asked if I could try and transplant some to see if I could get them to grow on my balcony. I was able to find 5 small plants along the edges that seemed to be a good size.

After we got the new beds put in, I headed home to start the transplant process. So I have never tried this before but I took all 5 plants and put them in the pot and added some water left it to time.

As I sit here typing I can see that 1 have already died, 2 plants are looking good and 2 is holding on for dear life!

First couple of Plants!

I was not even on planing on growing strawberries until I have my on plot of land in the far future, but this was an opportunity that I could not pass up. I mean free strawberries! I now hope to have at least one plant survive, so that I can watch it take off. I can also practice/watch the runners start new plants so i can replicate this in the future.

This will let me get some experience. Who knows a may add a blueberry plant to get a perennial forest in the sky!
